If you’re interested in making money online, but you are just starting out and don’t know where to begin, then article writing is a perfect way to make your first few dollars. It requires no special training beyond being able to read and write English. As long as you turn in work of a reasonably high quality and you can meet deadlines then you will be good to go.
Many people turn to online job boards such as Upwork when starting out with article writing. While this is a great way to get your first few clients and build experience, it can be somewhat difficult to make a solid writing wage from these sites. There’s TONS of people looking to hire writers and expecting 1000 word articles for $5.
After you’ve been doing article writing for a little while, it’s only natural that you’ll want to find some ways to make more money. That’s why we’ve put together this list of five of our favorite methods that you can use to do just that.
Top 5 Ways to Make More Money Writing Articles
- Increase Your Rates
The first way to make more money writing articles is to simply increase the rates that you’re willing to work for. While it’s understandable to work for low rates and do a few 500 word articles for $5 in the early stages while trying to gain experience, that’s absolutely a bottom of the barrel rate that you should move past as quickly as possible.
At the absolute minimum, you should be earning between $1.50 and $2.00 per 100 words that you write. If you can find a few clients providing you with consistent work at those rates, you’ll make a decent amount of money.
However, why settle for just a decent amount of money when writing is a skill that’s highly in demand if you can provide quality work? You should absolutely increase your rates periodically as you gain experience and feedback.
If you’re writing 15,000 words per week at $2/100 words, you’ll be making $1200 per month. If you were to raise your rate to even $3/100 words (which is still considered very low for quality writing), all of a sudden you’ll be making an extra $600 per month for the same amount of work!
- Increase Your Work Volume
Another fairly obvious way to make more money with article writing is to simply work more. If you can comfortably write 15k words as in the example above without breaking too much of a sweat, why not write an extra 5000 words or so each week?
Again, using the example of $2/100 words, you’ll be making $300 every week. If you were to do an additional 1000 words each day over five days, you’ll end up making an extra $100 per week, or $400 more every month.
And that’s only by doing an extra 5000 words weekly; if you felt comfortable enough, you could even do an extra 10k or more to boost your earnings even higher!
The one downside to this approach is it won’t take long to experience burn out if you are writing 20k+ words each week on a regular basis. It’s hard to maintain a high level of quality at that rate as well. It’s certainly not impossible to do so though, and it’s definitely a feasible way to make more money from your writing.
- Hire A Writing Team
Outsourcing is one of the best techniques out there for scaling up any type of online business. It’s even possible to outsource with a service based business like article writing.
If you can negotiate a contract for bulk article writing jobs at a decent rate, you can then turn around and hire a team to handle the actual work of writing. If you can secure a bulk work order that pays you around $30/1000 words for example, you can easily pay novice writers looking for experience $15/1000 words and end up passively making $15 for every 1000 word article that they complete.
Not only is this a great way to get your first taste of passive income, but it will also free up more time for your own writing efforts, basically doubling the amount of money that you can be earning on a weekly basis.
- Become An Expert In a Specific Niche
There are certain writing niches that tend to pay more than others. Writing clients in specialized niches such as legal, medical, financial, or anything highly technical tend to pay far higher rates than those paid by typical content mills.
If you’ve got a background in any sort of technical niche, such as one of the examples above, you can apply your knowledge and experience to writing for that field to make a solid living. Alternatively, if you are willing to invest the time and effort into learning as much as you can in order to cover these niches with confidence, that’s another option as well.
The fact is that people are willing to pay top dollar for expertise. If you are an authority on an in demand topic, then you will definitely be able to command a higher rate of pay with your article writing.
- Learn a New Skill Such as Copywriting
The final recommendation we have for earning more money is to learn a new writing skill, such as copywriting. Copywriting, also known as commercial writing, is the art of writing in such a way as to persuade a person or group to take action. Copywriting can be done in many forms, such as writing sales letters, white papers, or even marketing brochures.
Skilled copywriters have no shortage of work that pays well as it’s an extremely in demand skill. This is one of the most common ways for many freelance writers to take their income to the next level.
You can start out by taking cheap copywriting gigs and gaining experience and feedback as you go, or you can read a few sales books and apply what you learn from there. Alternatively, you can sign up for a copywriting course or find someone willing to mentor you.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for ways to take your article writing business to the next level and earn more money from it, then try to apply any of these five methods. All of them have been proven to provide results so long as you apply them. Good luck!

That is some sage advise and I have been looking into this for a while now. Fiver.com and others sites offer these services. Working from home has never been easier and your recommendations allow a novice writer to earn his or her worth quickly. Thank you for the heads up !
Really great advice, I have actually never looked at putting a dollar value per word. The outsourcing idea is just brilliant, that gives a person some ideas!
Terrific article thanks.
You’re welcome.
Great and refreshing ideas.
I got most interested in idea number 3, about hiring writing team. But I was wondering. You talk about Upwork or similar websites. But is it not difficult to find a good writing team because most of it is, I guess, on similar sites? Because it needs to be some value in the difference between my own writing and the team I would hire?
Try humaproofdesigns. They have a great writing team if you want great outsourced content.
Although I have my own website I have never really considered writing for others as a source of income. I never really thought or imagined that it would pay that well. After reading this though that is a pretty decent 2nd income that you could easily create simply by writing content for others. Maybe down the road this is something that I will look more into. May have to see if there is a large demand with my niche. Thanks for the insight!
Go for it. The more income streams you accumulate, the better.
